3 Ways Your Old Windows Could Be Damaging Your Home

Water damage is often hidden from sight

Water leaking from windows isn’t always obvious right away. Your home’s exterior appears to be in good shape, but you don’t see moisture seeping behind siding and into your walls slowly causing water damage. Over time, the damp creeps through sheathing and insulation. It can ruin interior walls, ceilings, and floors.

Here are three signs of water damage:

1. Water Around the Window

The leaks could be anywhere around the window top, sides, or bottom. The flashing might be improperly installed, for instance, or it might be missing altogether. Often, these leaks happen because the caulk or sealant around the window has gotten old and cracked, allowing rain to enter the house.

2. In the Wall Beneath a Window

Rain can seep in between the window sash and the jamb and trickle down to the framing studs in the wall without you ever knowing it’s happening. Over time, repeated leaks can rot wall studs and other wood framing members, which can lead to expensive repairs.

3. Exterior Painted Windowsills

This is a common spot for water damage in older homes with windows that have been painted numerous times over the years. It doesn't take much water to get through cracks in the paint, slowly rotting away the wood without you noticing. To check for problems, take a screwdriver and press firmly along a sill. If there’s hidden damage, the screwdriver tip will sink into the soft, damaged wood.
