Prepare Your Home for Winter's Chill with Help from Mass Save

Did you know that the median age of a home in Massachusetts is 53 years? Only New York has housing stock that is older than that (at 57 years, in case you're curious). If you live in one of our state's older homes, then you know how drafty they can be in wintertime. Insulation technology has improved in leaps and bounds over the last 400 years. That's why a state-run program, Mass Save, wants to help owners of older homes improve their properties' energy efficiency. Bruin is here to help protect you from winter's chill and save on your insulation project.

How Much Insulation Does My Home Need?

If your home was built prior to 1970, you may be surprised to learn that it may contain very little insulation, or even no insulation at all. And if your home was built after 1970, it's likely your insulation has become less effective over time. Both of these situations can lead to drafty, cold homes in winter and hot homes in the summer. Since heating and cooling costs account for up to 70 percent of the energy used in your home, a lack of insulation can lead to costly energy bills.

Most energy efficiency experts agree that your attic should contain 12 to 15 inches of insulation to adequately protect your home. Adding insulation to your exterior walls will improve efficiency further. Increasing the amount of insulation in your home could save you up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling costs.

Save 75 to 100 Percent on Insulation Improvement Costs with Mass Save

Massachusetts wants to help you save on your insulation upgrades. Through its Mass Save program, you may qualify for 75 percent off approved insulation improvements. Some income-qualified homeowners may be eligible to have 100 percent of their insulation costs covered by the state. The first step to saving on your home insulation project is to complete the no-cost Mass Save Home Energy Assessment. If the assessment finds that you are eligible, then you can get bids from authorized Mass Save Home Energy Services Program partners, like Bruin.
